Maybe we need an offshoot thread from this called ''dead wildlife in your garden/back yard''. :)

    Don't exclude the wounded!

He was almost the wounded one! He was tracking a deer when he came to the barbed wire fence behind him. He walked on a fallen log over the fence and the snake was coiled up right at the base of the log. He would have stepped right on it if he hadn't been looking down for the blood trail. A bite from that thing would have changed his priorities for a couple of weeks, if not more. He said he was so fat that he expected to find a squirrel or two inside when he skinned him but he was empty. Just pure muscle. It was mid morning and nice and warm by then so Mr Snake would have been ready to go. 12 rattles. He found the doe too.

Getting used to the wild life in our new garden. Was quite taken with this newt. Not sure what type it is though but at least I didn't step on it as it looked like a leaf initially.

Thanks for the link Owen. I had found it confusing trying to establish which type it was. Thanks also for the info on the german beer stein. :)

Some mystery animal has been making bloody great holes at the bottom of my garden :(

My son-in-law has kindly loaned me his time-lapse infra-red camera and has strapped it to a nearby tree,

When it has been on site for about a week, he will load the results onto my PC and we will finally know who the culprit is

....or at least that's the plan :)

    Ron

    ps
    Just added a possible culprit

Is that Moose really in your back garden. or are you suggesting that a similar beast has been making holes in mine ?

    :)

No, not my back yard Ron. I took some creative license just because it was an interesting photo. Moose, despite the size, can be quite docile.

Having said that, it not at all uncommon for that to happen and when it does, a few holes in the lawn are the least of your worries. A lasting childhood memory is my aunt chasing a moose down the street as it trailed her clothesline, with laundry attached, from its antlers. They can do real damage to fences, sheds, porches, etc.
This is actually the time of year, before the rut begins, where moose tend to disperse and can be found almost everywhere.

Great videos Ron. Thanks for posting. I often see them in my neck of the woods, albeit half the time they are being chased by a group of beagles.

I feel I ought to point out that the video I first displayed was courtesy of my son- in- law, who loaned me his time lapse camera and set it up in my garden, whilst the excellent videos that follow are all from YouTube itself.

My wife drew my attention yesterday to this handsome frog, sunning itself just outside the kitchen door.

One of last years tadpoles still is one.
It never fully metamorphosised into a frog.
Has back legs & that's about all.
Body about size of finger nail & about 5cm long.

edit:added 2 more pics (side view) taken with camera as other 2 taken on phone.

Snapped our friendly Robin while doing some gardening at my girlfriends place last week. It was only about 5 feet away.
