Hi, Our small local museum is running a commerative war exhibition starting 23 rd May, covering both 1st and 2 nd World Wars. I want to show a bit on the contribution made by women to the war effort, but I have run into a hitch on photos. They mainly seem to be copyrighted and the owners want a licence fee to display them, which, being a small unfunded museum staffed by volunteers, we can't really afford. Are there any good copyright- free photos out there showing women at work in both wars ( home front and in the services ) which I could use ? Otherwise I may have to scrap it, which I don't want to do as I feel that the contribution made by women can sometimes be overlooked. Many thanks for your help, Angela
No idea where you are (what country etc) but if you just want generic photos then I would suggest using the Australian War Memorial site (www.awm.gov.au) Most images have the status "Image copyright: Copyright expired - public domain" http://www.awm.gov.au/collection/006745/ 1941-04. WOMEN IN UNIFORM. (NEGATIVE BY CRANSTONE) http://www.awm.gov.au/collection/005198/ 1941-01. LONDON - A TYPICAL "WAAF", OR WOMEN OF THE AUXILIARY AIR FORCE GOES TO HER STATION. THESE WOMEN ARE DOING A YEOMAN SERVICE.
I wrote about my lovely sister Polly here: http://ww2talk.com/forums/topic/9134-land-girls-to-be-rewarded/ You are welcome to use anything from any of my articles providing you quote the source Ron
One of my aunts was in the Naafi. Another was a Landgirl, and another a Red Cross Nurse (VAD volunteer.). My Mum was a secretary at the Home Guard office. But sadly I don't have photos of them in their uniforms, just the memories.
Angela, Try various searches in Google Images. As for copyright maybe just attribute the source ... ? Copyright is a PITA - images from WW2 should be in the public domain by now. British Women in WW2 - Google Images Women in Factories WW2 - Google Images Regards ...
Hi Angela, Further to Cee's advice, try tuning these image searches ... * women WW1 "copyright free" - Google Search * women WW2 "copyright free" - Google Search ... to your requirements - many results will point into Wikimedia Commons. Best stick with 'WW1'/'WW2', rather than 'war', to save being swamped ! Steve
Hi Folks, Many thanks for all your help. I have tracked down some great photos of women at all kinds of jobs. I must say it has been an eye-opener. I hadn't realised until now the contribution that women made, especially back in WW1 times, when you tend to imagine that women just worked in the home. Again, thanks for the help - just wish I had the uniforms to go with the jobs !!!!!
If I manage to attach the right photo, this should be one of my late fathers' collection form 1944-47, possibly taken in Tunis, and on the back is written "Fred and Joan." No idea who Joan is but it looks like she could be a driver for the WRAC/F. Good Luck
I have a few original photos of ATS drivers you can use just PM me and i will send you some of them. Keith
I've just scanned 4 photos of my mam ... one in her nurse's uniform, 2 ATS photos, and one when she joined the Radar section. Unfortunately, I haven't a clue how to put them on here.
I can't post the photo of mam in her nurse's uniform ... mam's the one on the right of the one who is in such a uniform ... but I think the others might work. Hopefully.
