Additional Citation note The citation in the London Gazette of 30th March, 1944, gives the following details: At Kyauchaw, in Burma, on 18th January, 1944, Lieutenant Horwood with his forward mortar observation post accompanied the forward company of the Northamptonshire Regt. into action against a Japanese defended locality. Throughout that day he lay in an exposed position under intense fire and effectively shot his own mortars and those of a half-troop of another unit, returning at night with valuable information about the enemy. The following day he moved forward with another company, and from an observasion post which he established on a precipitous ridge, directed accurate mortar fire in support of two attacks. He also deliberately drew enemy fire upon himself, so that the fresh company he was with could see the Japanese positions. That night he remained on the ridge, and on the morning of 20th January again directed mortar fire in support of an attack. In the afternoon, while leading another attack, he was mortally wounded at point-blank range. Lieutenant Horwood set the highest example of bravery and devotion to duty, to which all ranks responded magnificently. His cool calculated actions during these three days, coupled with his bravery, very largely contributed to the ultimate success of the operation and the capture on 24th January of the Japanese position. From the second section of photographs, we have four soldiers from the second Chindit expedition: Donald William Thompson (1st King's Liverpool) who was lost during the retreat from the Blackpool block in late May 1944. Donald Wise (1st King's Liverpool) who was killed as his column marched from the Broadway landing area towards the Blackpool block. Jesse Higson was listed missing as of 25th May 1944. Once again, he was likely lost during the abandonment of the Blackpool stronghold. I also strongly suspect that he was a survivor of Operation Longcloth from the year before. Although I have no evidence of this, John Hirons most likely served with 54 Coy RE which formed part of 16th Brigade on Operation Thursday.
I believe that Ian Edgar MacPherson was the commander of Brigadier Calvert's Gurkha Defence Platoon. Each Brigade commander on Operation Thursday had what was in effect a Gurkha bodyguard. MacPherson led this platoon for Calvert and was present at the battle of Pagoda Hill in March 1944 (see link below), which was a brutal hand-to-hand engagement with the Japanese, clearing the way to establish the famous Chindit block named White City. George A Cairns VC - victoriacross In his book Fighting Mad, Calvert recounts MacPherson's death whilst a Chindit striking force were attempting to attack the Japanese base at Mawlu (near White City) in retaliation for the enemy's thrusts against the Chindit stronghold. He tells of MacPherson being shot in the head as he led his section against the enemy. This death affected Calvert greatly, to the point that his 2 I/C had to lead him forcibly away from the action.

7593961 CRAFTSMAN CECIL JASON GENTRY served with the Light Aid Detachment of 130th Field Regiment RA. The LAD had established itself at Kanyindan (on the southern edge of Maungdaw), just to the east of 'F' Troop 494 Battery, and was working flat out to repair several vehicles and a pair of 25-pounders that had been previously damaged by enemy action. Cecil Gentry was wounded on 1 May 1943 during a Japanese air-raid on the artillery positions; he died of his wounds at Maungdaw CCS the next day. On the morning of 1st May the Maungdaw docks were burning fiercely, the result of a raid the previous day that had struck a petrol dump at the jetty and set thousands of gallons of fuel ablaze. As the fire ran out of control black smoke belched across the Naf River estuary, visible for miles and doing little for the morale of troops patrolling the Mayu Range to the south. Another raid came in at midday, this targeting the artillery positions just east of the docks at Kanyindan. Again the flak put up by ack-ack guns failed to dissuade the bombers. They unleashed a mixed load of anti-personnel and incendiary munitions across the suburb and directly onto areas occupied by 130 Field. Another inferno resulted. Dozens of bamboo bashas caught alight and soon the whole area was aflame, a stockpile of mortar bombs causing huge secondary explosions. Great bravery was displayed as the Lowlanders battled the fire and strove to save men and materiel. The Light Aid Detachment was in the eye of the storm, putting vital equipment lined up for repair at risk of destruction. Gunner Caldwell, a cook from Regimental Headquarters, rolled fifteen full petrol drums away from the fuel store moments before the flames reached it. Other men rescued a pair of 25-pounders, dragging them clear with their tyres blazing to extinguish them before the carriages were wrecked. A gun tractor and two 15-cwt trucks were gutted; the loss of a wireless set carried on one of the trucks was a particular blow. By early evening, when most of the fires had been tamed or were burning themselves out, another raid hit half a mile east—carried out, inexplicably, by the RAF. Six Blenheims released bombs over the area in error which, Ronnie Nicholson remarked with typical understatement, “rather annoyed us as we felt we had had enough for the day”. 130 Field lost heavily from the Japanese attack. Fred Tozer of 494 Battery was killed instantly by a bomb that obliterated his slit-trench in the gun area, as was Douglas MacDonald, a driver from Regimental Headquarters delivering a truck to the Light Aid Detachment for servicing. Cecil Gentry (one of the LAD’s mechanics) and George Cook (a gun-fitter on the strength of ‘B’ Troop) were rushed to the Casualty Clearing Station on Maungdaw Island but died of their wounds soon after. Three other men of RHQ and three from the LAD were taken away with blast and burn injuries. Four gunners from 494 Battery were evacuated suffering from shock. Funerals were held for Tozer and MacDonald, Pipe Major McGhee once again called upon to play Flowers of the Forest for his fallen comrades as they were laid to rest in temporary graves near RHQ. The infantry ammunition dumps burned and burst through the night, though the artillery stocks of charges and cartridges piled north of the main road fortunately escaped untouched.
Vincent O'Neill was another soldier who served on Chindit 2 with the 1st South Staffordshire Regiment. He was killed during the establishment of the White City block, a few days after the battle for Pagoda Hill (see photograph taken in 2008).
RANDOLPH PARKER Private: Service Number: 14541921 1st Bn.Northamptonshire Regiment Died 14 June 1944 Commemorated on RANGOON MEMORIAL - Face 15. Age 21 years old. Son of John Francis and Frances Wilhelmina Parker, of Foxton, Leicestershire. Pte Parker was killed in the attack on Dome on 14 June 1944. It was a costly attack for the Northamptons and also 3/8 Gurkhas who were the second Battalion involved. A number of bodies were not recovered but Parker does not figure in the Missing Personnel file so it is likely he was buried but the grave was not found subsequently. I have attached some pages from the Regimental History by Jervois and a photo of the terrain I took in 2015 from Pt 5846. Dome is the last but one hill in the distance.
