Jim mentions DR training in his ID of the photo and RASC were certainly responsible for providing vehicles for driving schools so this may explain the presence of a solitary bike issued to them amongst ranks of BSA M20s.

Rich, I've just read this....and its not the first time I've seen this, I've come across it in several memoirs in Classic Motorcycle.

But I've also read that generally an NCO would nab the Matchbox if one was available, leaving M20s for the squaddies - the priviledge of rank = another 15-20 mph!:p

    Hello All,
Pushing my luck a little further following on from the great response we received to our last photo. This one is a little easier (I hope) is the soldier in the carrier a German or an Allied soldier with an Afrika Korps hat on? The carrier has a flea (I think ) badge on its guard any ideas on the unit?
    Thanks All

That's the Rhino of 1st Armoured Division not a flea.
AoS marking is 60 means the Infantry Brigade HQ in an Armoured Divsion.
The 60 will be white on green square.

    see.

Nah, unbelievable book-buying habit...:) - Nigel Watson's 'Universal carriers' - dead good.

My first though was that it looked like British battledress but I'm no uniform expert. Didn't German armour crews wear something similar ?

    What's he holding ? A dynamo armature and pretending it's a stick grenade ?
