Sorry about the quality of the attached photograph but it is copied from a photocopy. (I haven't found an original yet, still looking) The first photo shows men in an Auxiliery Unit patrol in Cornwall near Menheniot. The Sergeant left the patrol on 30th May 1943. But the others remained. All are wearing khaki berets. The second photograph is the standown photo of Cornwall Aux Units (Nov 1944). There are about 90 men in the picture, 15 of which are wearing khaki berets. The berets may help date the photograph - can anyone tell me when berets were first issued to Aux Units and Home Guard?
this wasn't the type of photo dating I originally thought it was when I read the thread title whooooooops TD edited to add: Perhaps more ----- Dating of a Photo
Back row, right hand side in the top photo looks like a foreign national with his beret pulled down the other side and with the cap badge over his right eye ... either that or very slack dress regs!
They look more like General Service Caps than Berets. first introduced under "Army Council Instruction 1407" of September 1943 The General Service cap or "Cap, Ridiculous" Tim
Thank you Tim a very useful link. I have always assumed that they were wearing berets This photo shows an Aux Units Patrol in 1944 wearing SERVICE CAPS.
