Very nice photos Paul! Just a question though, the vehicles on display, have they any connection to the bridge or are they just part of a generci WW2 style display?

They are vehicles owned by the ?Normandy Airborne Trust that used to be in an older museum close to cafe Gondree (now closed). Not sure of any connection to the area.

Apologies if this photograph from the PRO has been shwn before, but it does show how good the glider pilots were when you consider how close to the bridge they landed.

I seem to recall reading somewhere one of the pilots was asked to land as close as possible to the bridge by the commander in the glider as they approached. His reply after landing was something like, 'Is that close enough for you sir?'

I love stories like that !

Great Pic's Paul......To my shame I rode over that bridge on my way to Bayeux in 2006 for the night and never stopped to take a picture or have a brew at the cafe.

That's a fairly accurate landing alright!! Textbook stuff and no mistake!

Yes, it was certainly some of the most amazing flying of the war.

Is this the case for the Horsa glider fuselage as well?

It's from elsewhere I believe. That it is a fairly recent addition.

Not sure if this is just fable or has any basis in truth, my mate's grandad lived in Exeter and swore blind that the glider pilots knocked a chunk off his roof off whilst training for the pegasus assault.

He didn't know what they were training for, and by the sounds of it was very uppity about it with them (afterwards, I assume!), his main complaint being that he could understand the Germans knocking his house down but couldn't understand what he'd done to upset the Home Counties.

Always wondered about it, but not a topic I know enough about to know if it was likely or not.

    Pete.

Excellent stuff thanks Paul. This completes quite a collection I've amassed now. I'll have to figure out how to represent it decently and get to fit bases of troops on it, as soon as I do it'll be on the blog.

    cheers again!

...Great Pic's Paul......To my shame I rode over that bridge on my way to Bayeux in 2006 for the night and never stopped to take a picture or have a brew at the cafe.

If it's any consolation Andy, I drove over the bridge last year and from the car my wife took what must be the worst photo of it, ever, as I screamed "That's Pegasus Bridge, quick take a photo!"

Never mind ... Maybe next time I'll actually stop first.:rolleyes:

Here's one of Pegasus Bridge at daybreak that I took a few years ago. We had just got off the ferry and was heading to Ranville cemetery via the bridge.

    Thanks Paul.

It was so peaceful at that time of morning...I could have sat there for hours.

That last photograph is beautiful. I have some half decent pictures of the Bridge - my favourite is the one we took while we were having lunch at Cafe Gondree.

When we win the Lottery we're going back to Normandy - permanently!
