I have View from a turret by Bill Close on my xmas list lol, looks like a good place to start as it appears to cover the 3rd from start to finish and covers the same period as my Grandad
yes they were with the 10th.. cant find any evidence to back up the gold on black being their formation sign tho??
There is an in my opinion reasonably priced copy for sale now on Ebay (item 332374127263). Slightly scarce and makes great reading! So... Similar price on Amazon I see now... Just thought I had some more difficulty in getting my own copy at the time...
Bill Close's book 'A View from the Turret' has been republished by Pen and Sword as 'Tank Commander. From the fall of France to the defeat of Germany: the memoirs of Bill Close'. The first commands quite high prices on eBay and the second is very much cheaper. Depends on whether you want an 'original edition' or just the same words for less money! Another, more general type of read, is 'Taming the Panzers. 3RTR at War' by Patrick Delaforce....and also, by the same author, 'The Black Bull'. Delaforce himself was a FOO with the artillery chaps and was, I believe, attached to 3RTR towards the end of the War.
Hi, Maybe it was kept as a souvenir of his time in this division or the red on yellow fox badge did not come into use until a later date. You could contact “Postwarden”(John) on the British Badge forum and ask him if he has any information on it in the issue of the Formation Sign the MHS published on RTR insignia.
