Hello All A friend of mine has a photo of her father in WW2… it is attached. It’s an early war image. Early ‘Battledress Serge’ and FS Cap. As usual due to the angle of wear no visible cap badge and he has no visible insignia other than a Lance Corporal stripe. She believes he served in the Parachute Regiment eventually but she has no documentation. I have suggested that she applies for his service records, obviously. I just wondered if anything could be traced on him to give any hint… Jack Burke - 12/01/1921 we have nothing more than that at the moment. Kind regards, Pete
Hello Pete I am like a stuck record but get her to send off as soon as possible date of birth death cert £30 Hopefully other forum members can help add a bit more regards Clive
Thanks Clive - Yes, I have advised her to do this as well. I just wondered if there was any little titbits of information out there in the meantime…
The two J. Burke I have were both killed at Arnhem, I have a L/Cpl Burke (no name) who was with 250 Company RASC
Does she have any knowledge of any service he may have seen? or any mention if he was wounded or captured or anything? From Ancestry family tree I see he was married late 1942 (and 1967) maybe worth getting a copy marriage certificate and hope it has a unit and Army Number - without that I think it could be a struggle - there were J Burkes in 10th and 11th Parachute Battalion (although one was a Joseph) - without a number or something else like that I think it will just be possible candidates
Thanks Al - yes he certainly survived the war and I’m sure he remarried and my friend was born from the second marriage… this makes sense. She has absolutely nothing else information wise. So you think the 1942 marriage certificate may possible have a unit and army number on it? Would a copy of that come through ancestry?
Philip Reinders I have asked my friend for confirmation and she does believe he was Airborne but that’s all we know. AB64 yes he was married to a girl called Molly before he remarried after the war…
You can get certificates from Order a birth, death, marriage or civil partnership certificate - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk) for £11 - I've used it for death certificates a couple of times - I'm not sure what it will contain but it includes occupation so if he was in the Army at the point it should mention that but no idea if it would just say Soldier or if it would give unit, I think it can be hit or miss - even if it narrowed it down to a unit that may help No problem, I just wasn't sure if she had memories of him mentioning the Desert or any other little nothing comments that could give a little "in" to where he had been
