    If anyone could give me info as to the circumstances of death to the following casualties who are listed on the Brookwood Memorial I would be very grateful

    Private John Frederick Handford served with 2nd Parachute Battalion.

    He had embarked with the Battalion to North Africa, where they were due to take part in Operation Torch. Pte Handford took part in a Boxing tournament arranged on the troop ship Scythia, but was badly injured during one of the contests, and died shortly afterwards. The Battalion war diary reports he was buried at sea on 9 November, 1600hrs.

    Perhaps a stupid thought but as these guys are on Brookwood it means the bodies 'have potentially' been lost it might be that one or two were killed in training accidents - the famous blown apart and nothing could be found.......

    Not come across any of them yet, but plenty of soldiers dying in on water incidents where the bodies were not recovered

    This is an old thread but you may still like to know that the men who died on 13 june 43 in the UK landed in the river Tay when misdropped from an aircraft on a training exercise. Some casualties were recovered dead m one survived when wind caught his chute and pulled him across the water to land
