So now I've been exposed as the parsimonious old git who irons and re-uses an old 'Haig Fund' poppy each year To be honest, I really hadn't noticed. I do seem to recall that each collector's tray had just one or two with leaves - whether they were for the first few or for those who paid extra, I don't know. SSAFA were preferred in our house. The British Legion was pretty much thought of as a drinking club.
I find that the old fashioned parer clip does the job. But I too regret the passing of the wire poppy stem
Has the RBL's nefarious scheme to make you lose and replace your Poppy taken a step further? Seems like a noticeably shorter stem on one just obtained. Maybe my eyes are just getting longer with age.
