What was his full name? No Lawrence Lane on the COFEPOW database but there are several possible with Lawrence as the middle name.

Could only find this on ancestry.
    Lawrence Lane
    Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1942
    Registration district: Middlesbrough
    Inferred County: Yorkshire
    Spouse: Hilda Murphy

The date of the marriage does raise the question of when and where Lawrence was captured.

    The 5th Battalion Royal Norfolks.
The battalion embarked on the Duchess of Atholl (21,000 tons) on the 9th December 1941 and sailed for Halifax with the 18th Infantry Division convoy. Then to Singapore arriving 13th Jan 1942. Captured at Singapore 15th Feb 1942.

WS15. left England 12th Jan 42. Those destined for Singapore never reached there, but diverted to Colombo arriving 4th March.

    I wonder.

    Name:
    L Lane

    Rank: Private

    Army Number: 4469726

    Regiment:
    Durham Light Infantry

    POW Number: 81259

    Camp Type: Stalag

    Camp Number: 344

    Camp Location: Lambinowice, Poland

In February 1942 the 50th Division was recalled to the Western Desert and the British Eighth Army and found itself on the Gazala line. For some months the Durham battalions patrolled no mans land disrupting and stealing German and Italian supply lines in front of them, 'commerce raiding' and then attacking the supply columns for Rommel's armoured thrust which began the Gazala on 27 May. The Division's 150th brigade was forced to surrender on 1 June and Axis forces were now west, south and east of the remaining brigades.

Welcome to the site Sarah. Do you have photographs of the medals or a copy of the letter sent to your Gran?

Now you've established date of birth, might be wise to send from his official service record.

    Hi Sarah

You would be best off sending away for his service records, as per amberdog45's posted link. These will provide the information as to where he was when he was captured (assuming he was) what unit(s) he was in or attached to and from these the War Diaries can be found which may well explain what happened.

If the above information is correct - and I'm not doubting it - does this mean the Japan POW bit is a red herring? If so, it might be wise to rename the thread.

Trouble is SDP - were aren't sure and neither is the OP - hence the need for service records.

This is why you need his service records

Searching - Search the online database of the Far East Prisoners of War for a Lawrence only as a forename comes up with nothing, and searching for Lane gives results but the only one that might fit is a James Lawrence

His service records will give you the unit/regiment etc that he was in at the time of his capture, form other sources we can the help you find out where that unit/regiment was and hence answer your question(s) as fully as possible.

My thoughts entirely. If he was Japan POW he will have had a POW Card which will also contain address of NOK etc. These are available via Findmypast if anyone has access.
