P-38 Lightnings shot down more than 1800 Japanese aircraft during the war, more than any other USAAF aircraft type. Their first victories were scored on this date in 1942. Two P-38s of the 343rd Fighter Group were near the end of a long patrol when they intercepted and shot down two Japanese "Mavis" flying boats.

Clarified my post: most credits by a USAAF aircraft type. Don't want to offend my Navy and Marine Corps buddies!
