    Too true,tread carefully.

Last week this site knocked out my laptop.Operating on Windows 7,it appears that I am a victim of the Windows Command Processor problem of late.

From my research,it has been identified as a virus of the Fakevimes family of malwares.

Whatever it is,it initiates the plaque associated with the User Account Control,ie "Do you want to allow the following programme to make changes to this computer" Despite electing "No",it got through my McAfee and has crippled the computer.

It has been suggested that the bug infects the machine and uses the genuine Windows User Control plaque as the medium permissive to gain control of information etc.

It has also been suggested that it might be spyware for recording browser history for sale to third parties or that the same people who initiate the problem, offer a solution, fee based of course.

It seems to me that it matters little if the plaque section "No" button is clicked, the malware is still applied.I immediately attempted to run the McAfee but it would not function.

From the Windows Seven Forum, it would appear that there have been a few victims of this malware, common with the disabling of McAfee programme. A solution has been proposed on the Forum but it appears to be technically intensive and the machine has to be capable of running to download the solution.

I have not had much time to further ascertain a solution but I will probably take the laptop to a reliable servicing company, a company that I have used before.

McAfee should be aware of the problem and be capable of offering a solution.

When the dialogue box comes up on your monitor, Instead of hitting 'No' or 'X' to cancel, do Ctrl-Alt-Delete and close the process.

    My sincere commiserations :(

Thanks for pointing out the practical side of being affected by the actions of these bastards, there really is no other word for them.

Writing as someone who, some years ago, had to completely replace his PC as a result of malware, I now try to ensure that I keep well away from likely carrier sources.

I will not be posting again on that site in the forseeable future.

Would like to thank Mr G, Harry Ree, and Hugh Mac...Was able to read your advice and possibly save my computer...Had been redirected to a different site, twice, when trying to access ww2f...Found more info here regarding the problem than was being offered there....Love ww2f, but...
    http://safebrowsing.clients.google.com/safebrowsing/diagnostic?client=Firefox&hl=en-US&site=http://www.ww2f.com/
...I can't afford to fix/replace my machine....Some folks there seem to think the warnings are false positives, and do not heed the warnings. I won't go back until the all clear is sounded.

They should really get it fixed. All my browsers tell me not to go there. I'm not going to
until that changes. Sure would like an explanation of what's going on.

Well, once you click on a box/link you are too late. CTRL-ALT-DEL does work if you are faced with a malware link inviting you to click it. Unsuspecting users faced with this sometimes just use the 'X' [close down button] hoping to get rid of it, but that can often be hijacked into installing the malware.

For starters you need to run a good anti-virus program and a good anti-malware programe.

Unfortunately there are people out there with nothing better to do than try to bring down websites and crash or corrupt computers - just a game to them. :(

    Regards
    Hugh

Tip - IE browser is useless for detecting sites hijacked with Malware. Google Chrome will usually come up with a banner advising you the site you have just arrived at has been compromised. Opera/Firefox are more secure browsers as well.

Maybe worth mentioning some other simple things worth trying when something 'odd' happens on PCs with Windows -

    • Start your pooter.

    • Keep hitting F8 as it boots up.
    • Eventually, hopefully, A Black screen appears where you can select boot mode - select 'safe mode'.
(or 'safe mode with networking' if you feel confident in connecting to the Internet from that state - the networking also allows you to update AV & malware progs before scanning, or even download good free checkers like Malwarebytes.

    - Some windows installations also allow running a 'Startup Repair' from this menu - approach the startup repair option cautiously - do a bit of reading first and consider it only after trying other methods - it can be a bugger...).

    • safe Mode starts your Windows with the bare bones of what is required - no background or unnecessary programs.

    • Once into the 'safe' desktop - run your malware & AV scans.
    • Fingers Crossed...
(You can also consider 'System restore' from this safe state via the Control Panel, which takes your computer back to a previous point - hit & miss, but it can be a handy way around attack problems if a scan doesn't do it)

Obviously, the above will never be a 100% cure for everything, some things can get (much) more complicated, but it's the basic first method when trying to wrest control of a machine back from these arseholes who write malware.

I have to give a caveat that I'm no trained expert and you take steps at your own risk, some Malware is horrible stuff and can block recovery attempts, but the very basic approach above has meant I've never lost a PC to malware, or paid anyone else to coax one back to life.

Best thing is to make system copy with something like Acronis. I have it and it saved my day after having troubles with my laptop. I was able to reload the image of the laptop in around 30 minutes and lost only a few datas between this day and the day of thelast image i´ve saved. It isn´t expensive and it will save you many anger and a lot of time. I also use the Norton recovery tool which is good too.
