Yes, I know it's a double-edged sword for webmasters, but - hand on heart - I can say I've only had one piece of malware in the past five years. That appears to have been a bit of malicious code inserted via Opera, which caused it to open multiple tabs at once (and when I say multiple, I mean dozens!) and corrupted Windows Genuine Advantage, identifying my system as a pirate copy. It also stuck around in some hidden legacy files after I uninstalled Opera - I only finally got rid of it with SuperAntiSpyware.

    My AV detected Monty_1_ww2.exe.

It's more of an antibiotic than a virus as it only attacks things that are already septic. It does no real harm, just demands extra resources and makes you very cautious...

It is rumoured that a certain site has carries out attacks on other sites, in the hope of driving it out of business. That is what I heard, I have no idea who, or what, but it is a persistent rumour..

Have not seen any of that since Roger Honts was active at MCF.

There was a very messy spat a few years back where one of Rogers moderators became a moderator on another site, fell out with the owner and wiped the whole database and destroyed the forum.
    It does happen!

Well now it is on the DoD list of infected sites so I can't get in from work but WW2Talk is okay still.

Yep. Happened yesterday. Getting it off that list will be problematic at best.

It is a fact that for all intents and purposes that WW2 site is Kaput...
Sort of proves what I posted.

Firefox and Panda did not allow me to look at it. This is indeed a great loss. More, a great loss brought about by bloodyminded vandalism pure and simple.

Let's keep our fingers crossed that the situation can be recovered as the two sites are very complementary to each other, and each carries interesting and educational information that is not always available on the other.

There really needs to be consequences for those who perpetuate this type of vandalism.

I am at my wits' end with WW2f. I have had no trouble getting on, I've run full Norton scans several times, and can find no reason for the problems. It really looks like a ghost town, but I won't abandon it. I wish I knew what I could do.

There is little anyone but the people who run the site can do, until they clean up the site it should only be accessed with a lot of caution, like using a very limited functionality browser or a "throw away" virtual machine, a text only browser is theoretically safe but the pages you get are going to be really hard to read. Attacks are random so you may notice noting but, as a rule, it's the malware your antivirus doesn't recognize that will corrupt your system so don't be overconfident.

After they clean up it will take a while to get off the infected sites lists, the worse thing is that this is not the first time they have been succesfully attacked and that's bad from an automated reputation algorithm perspective, we know there are good and dedicated people working on ww2f but the algorithm doesn't. AFAIK they changed the software in the hope of getting less vulnerable code but the new version proved just as vulnerable as the old one.

The whole thing makes me mad, a lot of people put a lot of effort into creating a good thing and some *&%&$!!! cybervandal, assuming it's nothing worse, has fun damaging it.

I ran 'StopZilla' today...the free version and it kicked out a bunch of stuff AVG nd AoL didn't pick up.

I haven't had a problem accessing the site except for a few random screeen freezes.

I personally ting the problem lies in the manner video links can be up loaded to the site. Videos are inherently full of nasty little critters.

    Google warning cleared.
I've been on for a couple of days now.
    Seems fine.

Thank Jeff/Slipdigit & Otto, not my doing.
Jeff's the poor bugger that has to sit on his hands and take the inevitable flak while the attack is gradually repelled. ;)

Oh, and they still can't spell 'armour' over there, and appear somewhat jealous of Bovington... Which is nice.

There is a rumour that our neighbours in the US labour with that affliction. :D
