The Final Rearguard at Dunkirk - 139th (Army) (4th London) Field Regiment Royal Artillery (The 'Lewisham Gunners')
    From their War Diary, Apr-Jun 1940 - WO 167/506

    Malo-les-Bains. 30/5/40 1030
All spare personnel under Major O’Meara who had joined the C.O. near Proven, were sent to the beaches to embark. This party consisted of 4 officers and 52 O.Rs and embarked that night. This left the C.O., Asst. Adjt., Orderly Officer, Capt. Pearson and 2/Lt. Smith and 27 O.Rs.

This left the C.O. (Lt. Col. G.Ames), Asst. Adjt,. Orderly Officer, Capt. Pearson and 2/Lt. Smith and 27 O.Rs.:

    Sergeant Hills
    Sergeant Knight
    Lance-Sergeant Miller
    Lance-Sergeant Foster
    Lance-Sergeant Bance
    Lance-Sergeant Jones
    Bombardier Hart
    Bombardier Miskelly
    Lance-Bombardier Watson
    Lance-Bombardier Rivers
    Lance-Bombardier Brown
    Lance-Corporal Cross (R. Sigs)
    Gunner Sterling
    Gunner Manning
    Gunner Roffey
    Gunner McLeod
    Gunner Rush
    Gunner Wickery
    Gunner Warnett
    Gunner Capon
    Gunner Smith
    Gunner Bowditch
    Gunner Farley
    Gunner Hills
    Gunner Costin
    Gunner Catley
    Gunner Tollett
    Gunner Lamberth
    Gunner Gore

From my grandfather's anecdote: these men were chosen by lots, one man in three remaining with the last field guns. My grandfather was one of the lucky men sent to the beaches, although in the end most of the 'stay behinds' got out too.

According to the Royal Highland Fusiliers Museum the citation reads:-

“During the assault of a village in NW Europe in January 1945 Fusilier Donnini’s platoon came under concentrated fire and he was hit in the head. After recovering consciousness he charged down 30 yards of open road and threw a grenade into the nearest window. With the survivors of his platoon he closely pursued the fleeing enemy. Within a close range of trenches and under intense fire Fusilier Donnini rescued a wounded comrade then returned to the open firing a bren gun. He was wounded a second time but recovered and went on firing until a grenade he was carrying was hit and exploded killing him. During this action, fought at point blank range, the determination and magnificent courage of Fusilier Donnini enabled his platoon to capture the position accounting for 30 Germans and 2 machine guns.”

Fusilier Donnini was the youngest recipient of the Victoria Cross during World War 11 (19yrs old)

I think that 4803395 Pte. I. King, in list 2 of post 30, is the person written about in The History of The First Battalion The Lincolnshire Regiment in India, Arakan, Burma and Sumatra (page 9):

"At Indin many heard their first sounds of battle when they heard the guns firing on the positions near Donbaik to the south. The Battalion was able to put in a few more days' battle practice and battle inoculation, while the Commanding Officer took small parties forward to reconnoitre future positions. At Indin we had our first casualty when one of the signallers, Pte. King, was bitten by a snake. He was rushed to the Regimental Aid Post, where Captain Craig, the Medical Officer, had anti-snake bite serum and gave him injections. Pte. King, though away from the Battalion for some time, finally recovered and came back to us."

Thanks again Rob for the extra info - bet he didn't expect to be bitten! :)
