While looking at CWGC's Panel List for the Rangoon Memorial, I noticed that two of the names had been struckthrough with a comment "Now known to be buried Farmingdale (Long Island) National CTY, New York, USA" - see attached

A quick check showed that Drivers Morris and Robinson are indeed buried there, both with a date of death record as 25th/26th April 1945

Just out of curiosity, I googled around but couldn't find any details of their death, or the doubt over the date, nor why they would have been on the Rangoon Memorial in the first place.

Could any forum members shed any light on this?

Very interesting. This is another example of the US repatriation regulations for casualties abroad. It is likely that the remains could not be individually identified, and probably because there were more American personnel aboard the Dakota than British, all remains were transported to New York in this instance.

    Thanks for that.

Still seems strange they they must have been reported as "missing" to be commemorated at Rangoon but I suppose it was just a clerical thing

I smiled at the inscription on his stone - "Royal British Army" :)
