Cannot say the difference between a raid and an attack. However, the target was that they actually occupy Gialo and defeat the Italian garison. Would say that this is much more than only a raid. Since they dailed to do so - the defeated SAS on the flight from Benghazi had not the safe "harbour" as it was planned.

The location of the old fort. Take the left, longest, wall of the new fort on above picture as a line. Extend it to somewhat just outside the picture. There it was. Shape was looking like a parallelogramme with its longer sides from east to west. Round towers in the corners. Standing on a shallow hill.

Thank you very much! With this information I can start creating the maps. Though I have to do it with the current statics in the game so I some historical facts will be left out. I'll post some pictures here when it's done.
Thanks again Kuno and the others.

...once you have completed Gialo you may do something about Giarabub ;-)

    @ Fuchs,

    Germany against Great Britain [IMG]
Actually it was Italy fighting at Giarabub...

The Libyan oasis of Giarabub lies in the heart of a harsh, drab wilderness 300km southeast of Tobruk.
    ...would say it is south.

It was Mussolini's loneliest and farthest outpost in Libya, a stronghold in the forsaken land of sun and sand.
There were posts much further "outside"

Its presence, with its garrison of Italian troops,
    Most of them were Libyans.

was a constant threat to the British-held oasis of Siwa a few miles away across the Egyptian frontier. Since June 1940, the Australian 6th Cavalry Regiment had kept under siege the Senussi oasis and its outposts but the garrison commander refused to surrender. On March 21st 1941, a battalion of the Australian 18th Brigade advanced in a blinding sandstorm.

But it looks a lot better than most of those maps. Would have to compare the layout but at least the buildings are looking as they should.

Is there a German flag on one of the pics?

....is there as well a map for Kufra?

Teams are Italy vs Australians. And it's a game with alot of hard work thus not all statics are 100% correct and the map is far from scale 1:1 just for the sake of gameplay.

Thats just a simple description to make the player excited while loading, wont trust it too much, sometimes they just copy it from Wikipedia :p They got better things to do.

It's Italians because it would be quite a waste of time to make playermodels for every soldier, at fall of Tobruk it is just British but those where South-Africans. It is already a miracle the Italians are ingame if you ask me, they spend alot of time on those playermodels.

This screenshot was made in the beta, thats why it is a German flag. It is now Italy vs Australia.

For the person playing it, like me, it is one of the better maps ingame. A jewel concering gameplay and it is created with very well done research on the area.

There is no map about Kufra as far as I know.

That link contains all the maps, just click on West Front of North-Africa. They have finished North-Africa already but West Front is still in development, more theatres will be seen in future. N-A doesn't feature all the battles fought there and some maps are far from realistic but thats gameplay and time issues. Plus North-Africa only already got 16 maps, thats more then the original game itself.

Great! New players are always welcome :)
It's not a standard game though, a bit realistic, nothing then normal Battlefield 2.
But hey, if you like it, you can always join my clan. 130th Panzer Lehr. Also, feel free to play with any guys with the [130.Pz] tags ingame.

Some advice: teamwork is a bit low on public servers like Hslan but learning the game is the best on those servers, it's always busy at Europe evenings, then theres also the 101st Airborne server, usually around 20 people in Euro evenings, thats where more experienced players are.
And then theres other servers that are populated too, but just try it out, atleast all server admins are kind on this game, it's not such a big community.

I have downloaded the game now, but I keep receiving the error "patch verification failed: The root directory doesn't exist" when trying to install. Any suggestions?

I think we are talking about a set of four ops undetaken in September1942
    - Agreement/Daffodil against Tobruk
    - Bigamy/Snowdrop against Bengasi
    - Caravan/Hyacinth against Barce
    - Nicety/Tulip agaist Jalo

According to my source the "flowery" names are from K. Shaw's book on the LRDG that was written at a time the true codenames were unknown.

The Tobruk operation is very well documented, the Gialo one a lot less.

Anyway this is what my source reports.
The battle lasted from 15 to 20 September, initial allied plans expected a garrison around 200 strong, actually the Italian forces were two MG companies, a Sahariana company, two 77/28 gun batteries and some carabinieri, all told around 500 men with 8 guns and 40 MGs commanded by major Francesco Turcio. To make things worse the Pistoia infantry division was assembling in Agedabia just 200 miles away.

The attacking Force Z was mostly SDF troops but led by NZ LRDG patrol Y2, the attack plan was captured on a barge of the failed Tobruk attack so there was no surprise.
    Force Z included
    1st motor Batallion camel corps with 3 companies (2, 4 & 9)
B troop Lt. Bty. Sudan Artillery Regt. with 4 3.7" guns.
Y Lt. AA Bty Sudan Artillery Regt. with 4 captured 20mm Breda guns.
2 A/Tk Bty. Sudan Artillery Regt. with 4 captured 47/32 guns.
Total 809 men and 170 vehicles including some armoured cars.
Y2 patrol LRDG (Capt. Hunter) with 21 men and 6 Chevrolet 30cwt trucks.

R2 patrol LRDG (Lt. Talbot) with 18men and 6 Chevrolet 30cwt trucks was also involved but could not reach the oasis due to air attacks.

The source (a six page article in Rivista Militare) gives a day by day report of the action from the initial attack on the night of the 16 to the retreat on the 20 when an ULTRA intercept revealed a relief column from Pistoia was on the way. Basically despite repeated attempts the attackers failed to dislodge the defenders from the fortificatons they occupied.
The Italians had 14 dead and 7 woudeds the Allies lost 8 dead 45 woundeds and 8 MIA of which 2 were taken prisoner so the others were presumably lost as well. 35 allied vehicles were lost mostly to air attack.

My apologies for the extremely late reply but thanks nonetheless for some very valuable information.

Vehicle load out for the map is limited though and I don't got that much Italian material in this mod but my goal is to make it semi-realistic so I can change things for the sake of gameplay.

But thanks alot TiredOldSoldier, I will file this in my info file :p

Also thanks for pointing out Hyacinth is actually Caravan, we have that map ingame and it's currently called Operation Hyacinth so we can probably change that.
