Flight Lieutenant Lucky’s escape from the Germans is very interesting. After a number of failed escape attempts in Italy he was moved to Germany after the Italian armistice. Here he started to smoke cigarettes laced with aspirin which produced symptoms of heart failure, After numerous medical examinations he finally persuaded the authorities that he was seriously ill and was repatriated to the UK. On arrival in the UK he on 8 September 1944 he appeared before an RAF medical board who found no sign of any heart condition and he was rated as A 4B
