Burning the midnight oil tonight I was watching a episode of The Last Days of WW2 and they mentioned the story of P-51 Mustangs and Mosquito's bombing of the Shellhouse (Gestapo Headquarters) in Copenhagen March 21, 1945. One of the aircraft apparently hit a telegraph pole (I guess thats fairly low flying in a city) and crashed into the side of a local school. Unfortunately the second wave assumes that is the target and they bomb the school killing 80 something children and a significant amount of teachers. One a brighter note the headquarters are detroyed too killing some 100 Gestapo. A rather nice site with all the details: raf1 Cheers Andy
A good site covering this daring raid. The gestapo actually sent the prisoners to the top floor in order to prevent the mosquitos from dropping the bombs on the location. Here's a clip with actual footage: Dril Agenten v. 3 Jakob
I can't remember hearing of this raid until the anniversary yesterday. Terrible loss of life. Operation Carthage - Wikipedia Operation Carthage - The Shell House Raid - 21st March 1945 - The People's Mosquito
I only have a vague memory of this and today a Danish friend sent today's Danish newspaper article, with a short, stunning original film clip: Ny film om fejlbombningen af Den Franske Skole. Ægte optagelser viser angrebet fra piloternes perspektiv The film clip links in Post 1 & 3 no longer work. There are other, longer documentaries on: (8 mins) ; (17 mins) and (23 mins, with several interviews)
