As far as warfare goes, it's doesn't get more extreme than Operation Arctic Fox, the German actions in Northern Norway and Finland against Russia. (And sub-operations like Silver Fox, Platinum Fox etc)

I'd love to know if Murmansk was ever genuinely under threat at any point and what that would have meant. Would the convoys have gone to Archangel instead? And would that have been much more hazardous. I've been reading about it on Wikipedia (sorry) but keen to find out more. Recommendations? Books? Websites?

    Hi James,

Not really something I know much about but I would tend to lean towards the Finnish fighting the Russians as a tougher ordeal with all things considered. Not taking nothing away from the Norwegians mind, just my opinion.

My father was in the Merchant Navy (post war) and he only went upto the Artic a few times as far as I'm aware. He told me he hated it. Constantly smashing ice with sledgehammers and rough seas with the waves breaking over the boat with the spray freezing before it hit the deck. He much prefered the Eastern Pacific routes up the West coast of America to Canada.

    Cheers
    Andy
