Has there been any further news regarding the proposed 'redevelopment' of the wonderful airborne museum at Oosterbeek? I am beginning planning for my 2009 school battlefields tour.

its empty all has been removed and have heard that only 4 to 5 dummies will be posted back all other stuff will go in store, the big scalemodel of the battlefield in the big entrance hall is also gone and will not return!

    Mark,

As I understand it the plan is to be open in time for the 65th anniversary in September 2009...so when do you go?

Is this really true? I sincerely hope not.

If it is true, it seems rather strange that a museum undergoing redevelopment is removing exhibits that will not be returned after the redevelopment is finished.

Perhaps the exhibits were on loan and recalled, but I think unlikely given the subject.

Lets hope that the curator has a quick rethink.

it is true, hopefully someone has been able to rescue it, but I am nit sure if he was able to do so.

It will be back as a modern museum and not a such as it used to be!

Heartbreaking and crazy-it is one of the best military museums I have ever been to, with amazing exhibits which told the story of the battle clearly and well. What on earth possessed them to do that?
We are going in October 2009. I don't like the sound of the replacement. Is it by any chance going to be based on 'In Flanders Fields' in Ieper?

Never having visited I assume the fear is that this is one of those 'vapidity attacks' that can afflict modern museums, where the search for some sort of shiny modern multimedia approach eclipses an otherwise splendid collection?
    Style overriding content?

They do it to pubs too...

I can understand a bit of a refurbishment i.e. a lick of paint etc.. but to go the whole hog and change it beyond all recognition is totally lost on me.

I've visited the museum on several occasions and I've always enjoyed it and looked forward to returning. For those that have never visited, you really have missed an excellent and informative museum, even the shop had plenty to offer!

I am glad that I saw it in 2005. A wonderful museum and a tribute to the people who fought there. It would be a real shame if it were less so.

This gets weirder and weirder. It reminds me of the classic decision to dismantle Pegasus Bridge just before the 50th anniversary of D-Day and dump it in a field. I'm not being bitter and cynical but I won't be surprised if the new attraction isn't finished when we visit next October. There's another museum in Arnhem itself which I haven't visited and I presume that the very good 'Liberation Museum' outside Nijmegen is still going? Recommendations, please!

Mark - there is also a good museum on the Island about the fighting on the Island. I would recommend that. I will try and find you a weblink for it.

I would still take your group to Hartenstein; whatever the state of the museum, it's an original building. They can look at wartime photos, and still see features on the building that were there in '44. That's why it is as amazing as Talbot House - and you will know what I mean when I say that.

    Mark,
There is also a visitor centre near the bridge...and I think the 'other' museum you mentioned is the Arnhem 1940-45 War Museum...as Paul says a visit to Oosterbeek even without the Hartenstein is a must....the cemetery, the crossroads, the Tafelberg and the 4th Para Brigade hollow and the old church area are all areas with significant historic interst and some very much like 1944.....

The big display of the battlefield in the main hall, the one which matched with the movie showed in the hall, the plan was that it was dumped as it was not to be replaced in the museum
