I've been to many a gun show and military history show and looked over everything Edelweiss I can find...I've never been able to find a patch like this. Has anyone seen it? It has leather on the back of it.
I think that you will find that is the Gebirgsjäger badge, but as it is embroidered in metal it was probably specially made for an officer. Regards Tom
Aye, Gebirgsjager alright...... Mind you that chap in the photo is a long long way from the Mountains!
Ger, That is just what I thought when I saw the photograph. Having just spent time on several sites the badge does look to be non standard and I do think it was made specifically for an officer of higher rank. Regards Tom
Ger, That is just what I thought when I saw the photograph. That photo is quite interesting, look at the different types of troops there. Panzer, Gebirgjager and Infantry, just shows it was all about individuals getting across the Seine rather than complete units. Surprised no-one is looking up at the sky.

Just after the pic was taken they were desimated by air attack. From the book Ruckmarsch! by J.P.Pallud.
Smudger - Its actually just a course thread and not metal...but very tight and well made. What would something like this be worth? just a guess or estimate, though I dont plan to sell it. Please none of the classic old man "Well it's worth what someone will pay for it"..
Smudger - Its actually just a course thread and not metal...but very tight and well made. I agree with Smudger - it looks very much like wire, but you're the one who can tell. If it isn't I guess then that this quote from the link below doesn't apply. Pg 53:Officers occasionally wore hand-embroidered bullion wire versions of the Edelweiss. I purchased it from the estate of an extensive collector..... Along with some luftwaffe patches, and a vehicle flag. I'd love to post pics of those but I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post swastikas? Anyway, at the time I was told the exact one i had was photographed in a Nazi emblems ID book, or something along those lines... I can't recall what the book was, i really should have written it down...
