Discussion in 'The Women of WW2' started by Owen Ap Benfro, Nov 19, 2012.

  1. Seek further information on the wartime service of Iris Hooper of Pembrokeshire.
She received some general training in London during the early days of the war. Travelled overseas she was on the staff of the Pretoria General Hospital. January 1942, she joined the Army Nursing Service and posted middle east, working in a C.C.S., 1942 - 1943.
Post to U.K. she volunteered for further active service and landed in Normandy on D-Day +9 crossing europe to land up in Germany at the end of the war.
Oct 1945 she was made an Associate of the Royal Red Cross.
It is believed she went on to serve in Malaya, however that is not yet confirmed.

I'm not sure if you have the exact details of her nurse training, but she trained at St. Peter's Hospital, London between 1933 and 1936. Her home address in 1942 is given in the General Nursing Council Register as:
    Sandy Haven, St. Ishmael's, Haverfordwest.

Sorry for delay in reply having only this morning returned from short break/research in France.
I know of her home and have only last week given a free voluntary talk to the Area History Group on; Stories behind some Pembrokehsire Miltiary Headstones, the talk was given in St Ishmael's.
Iris Annie Hooper was born in 1915 the daughter of George & Annie Jane Hooper nee' Williams who had mrd in 1905, I believe at St Ishmael's, but you probably worked that one out already.
I did not know however of the location of her training, so that adds to the database.
