The Royal Navy's newest and largest attack submarine HMS Astute has got into difficulty off Skye, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed. BBC News - Nuclear submarine HMS Astute 'grounded on rocks' HMS Astute is based at the Faslane Naval base on the Clyde The 39,000 acoustic panels which cover its surface mask its sonar signature, meaning it can sneak up on enemy warships and submarines alike, or lurk unseen and unheard at depth. The submarine can carry a mix of up to 38 Spearfish heavyweight torpedoes and Tomahawk Land Attack Cruise missiles, able to target enemy submarines, surface ships and land targets, while its sonar system has a range of 3,000 nautical miles. I wonder if its own sonar is effected ? Regards Tom
FFS! "Submarine HMS Trafalgar sustained millions of pounds worth of damage when it ran aground off Skye in 2002." Great, now more bloody bills to be paid and another great gap in our capabilities!! Let's just sell the whole lot and become 'a small island with coastguard' protecting our pervious borders and stop all this 'punching above weight' nonsense here's the current Commander, with his next boat Royal Navy
last May, while under construction, "a fire broke out in the conning tower as 20 people were working on board." "Now it has emerged that there are problems with the vessel's propulsion system, a fault which engineers have been unable to rectify because of the fire." + + + + "It is understood that the boat ran aground by its stern in a manoeuvre that “went slightly wrong” after it had dropped some sailors ashore in tidal waters off the Isle of Skye. As the tide rapidly ebbed it is thought the skipper of Astute, Commander Andy Coles, decided not to power it off the obstruction as it would risk damaging the hull"
the boat ran aground In this country - which, after all, is just one long coastline - the Navy don't run aground. They just touch the bottom of the sea - and are dead serious about it. It seems to me, that you, ladies and gentlemen on this forum, are on average fairly forgiving of any aviator fancying trying her/his boundaries on a nice day. Ref thread Low Pass Flybys. The Navy needs to try theirs, too.

Quote on BBCNEWS24 this morning... "I'll bet the captain is in a dark place this morning - and I don't mean sitting in his cabin!" Apparently...."Britain's stealthiest submarine" is on the surface - in full view of traffic on the Skye bridge!
Why is it that the sub -commander with a parking problem gets fired - but all the people that sign ridiculous procument contracts end up with huge pensions and a seat in the House of Lords?
They are apparently thinking about a courts Martial for the ex Sub Commander. Not very lucky as I believe the Sub collided with a tug on the return. Regards Tom
There used to be a series on the BBC Radio many years ago called 'The Navy lark' they were always running aground too . Q: What was all the white smoky stuff comming out of the Sail/conning tower .
More bad news for HMS Astute. Only this time, not so amusing: BBC News - One killed in HMS Astute nuclear submarine shooting
Q: What was all the white smoky stuff comming out of the Sail/conning tower . Not from the conning tower - from the Captains ears! we've hit what?? :mad111:
