Should be an interesting look back at those uncertain times. On thing sticks out for me in that the War Office did not appear to know what the mode of warfare that the British Army would be engaged in. "Not to be taken into front line trenches" gives an indication that they thought that once again there would be the almost static defences and perhaps stalemate to follow. By 1944,The Political Warfare Executive prepared and the Foreign Office issued for the invasion,Instructions for British Servicemen in France, how to behave to the civilian population.based on the ongoing situation of the civilian dimension and indicating a deep sympathy for the French people. It carried an opening quotation from Churchill made in 1943 on the certainty of France rising again "free,united and independent"
