BBC NEWS | UK | Can Norton make its marque again?
As a certain Norton fixated Member is no doubt aware ;) :
"It supplied more than a quarter of the British armed forces' 400,000 motorcycles during World War II"
(though as it's a quote from 'The Meeja' I'll be unsurprised if it's inaccurate )

Best of luck to Mr Garner, a brave man but I hope they get the marque's status back up as well as Triumph managed.

We have been discusing this on my Motorbike forum.

The conclusion was they won't be able to compete with 'pocket rockets' like this:

    Goodluck to them though :)

What is that, a bycicle for Manga-lovers?

This is what a Motorcycle (with a capital M) ought to look like!

Even if it's a Triumph Bonneville, that is ;)

I don't believe that there will ever be serious production of new Nortons and I don't think that they would interest me anyway. I'm a compulsive tinkerer. What do I want a modern bike for ?:)

Whoops, almost forgot the original query.

Nortons certainly claimed 1 in 4 and if the immediate pre-war contracts are taken into account then they made + - 100,000 machines so it is more-or-less true.

Is there a following on Bikers on here by any chance?

I'm organizing a day trip to France in May with some bikers. We are doing a Battlefield Tour of Dunkirk if anyone is interested?

Changed to "almost a quarter" on a recent BBC article.

Norton Motorcycles' 122 years of speed
As globally renowned motorbike builder Norton goes into administration, the BBC looks back on its past glories.
    ...
During World War Two the firm withdrew from racing but manufactured almost 100,000 sidevalve motorcycles - almost a quarter of all British military motorcycles.
