    Thanks all.

The overall trip was very good, even if the weatther was a little damp to start with.

Here's some photos from the trip.

Does anybody recognise this fire control bunker? Which famous movie did it appear in?

    Thank you chaps.

It was one of those 'I reckon that will make a good shot' photos as I walked past the gun.

This is a close up of some of the markings on the end of the barrel that I noticed after taking the photo.

This is a german bunker which is situated on the hillside overlooking Port-en-Bessin. It was the scene of heavy fighting between the german defenders and 47 Royal Marine Commando and was eventually taken by the commandos on the evening of 7th June.

For reasons unbenown to me, the soil that you see banked up around the bunker was put there postwar.

The entrance in to the bunker is now unfortunatley blocked up.

Odd - that 'embrasure' had pipework in it in 2006. I thought it was a service reservoir? What did the plaque say, I'm sure that wasn't there?

Edit: someone's dans le merde. Not sure whether to laugh or cry. Page 2.

I'm glad you said that as it looked like a 50s fosse septicque (septic tank) to me. There's another outside Courseulles, and another near Arromanches; maybe they will have plaques on soon?

Wonder who put the memorial up??

It's not a brilliant photo, but this is a June 1944 photo of Douvres, taken by an officer of 79th Armoured.

    Beautiful...
How long before this one makes the papers? Though I see that French thread is a year or so old.

Wail reference to Cousins memorial dedication:
How I see it: Robert Hardman documents the 65th D-Day commemorations with veterans in Normandy | Mail Online
They may be referring to the one here? but a 'bunker is definitely mentioned'
    Port-en-Bessin in Normandy 1944

Inspiration/placing of the memorial here (7th of June 2009):
    47 Royal Marine Commando

Is it possible that there was a bunker there, it just isn't now? (Rereading that French thread it seems that may be the case? )

    I think they're for Bore-sighting John.
Place 2 threads across those center-lines, look down the bore and line it up with a reference point, then set the sights to that point.

I may be wrong. Doubtless one of the Arty types would be more certain.

Here's a quick overlay of the contemporary map on the modern GoogleEarth picture. Reference points are the lock in the harbour and the road along its north-eastern edge that turns south. Note the harbour has been enlarged.

The reservoir is the keyhole-shaped grey blob at the top of the zigzag path, conveniently not obscured by anything on the map ;). Bearing in mind it's above ground level, you'd have thought photo-recce would have picked it up if it had been there in 1944.
