Just thought I would upload some of the memorials I photographed in Normandy. Hopefully anyone researching a particular Soldier or Regiment may be directed to this fine forum. Please feel free to add to the list. 51st Highland Division Memorial to the location of the first British Graves in Normandy The Suffolk Regiment at Hillman The US Rangers at the Pointe Du Hoc The US National Guard Units who landed on Omaha Beach The Easy Company/Band of Brothers Memorial at Brecourt Manor First Canadian Scottish Regiment Royal Winnipeg Rifles 2nd Battalion, The Hertfordshire Regiment
Royal Artillery Units of 50th Division Major General Sir Alexander Stanier at Arromanches A multiple memorial at Arromanches To the Men of the Merchant Navy at Arromanches L.S.T & Landing Craft Association Memorial at Arromanches Military Police Memorial at Bayeux Sherwood Rangers Memorial at Bayeux 2nd Battalion, Essex Regiment Memorial at Bayeux
Very good to see these, Jonathan. I was especially impressed by the number of 50th Div units: the RA, 231 Bde, 2 Essex, 2 Herts, Sherwood Rangers. I've always been fond of 29th Infantry Division, too, because two-thirds of it came from my mother's home state of Maryland. They're especially meaningful today, thanks.
The tour guide looks familiar Its Mike Woodcock who is the archivist for 9/Para. His Dad was Sgt. Ginger Woodcock who should have taken part in the assault of the Merville Battery. He was in the glider that suffered a severed tow rope and had to make an emergency landing in England. He eventually arrived later on 6 June with the rest of 6th Airborne. Mike was a really excellent guide and a really nice bloke as well. He told us many a good tale in the bar during the evenings in Normandy especially the stories involving Terence Otway.
Has anyone else got some memorial photos to add to the thread? It would be nice to build up a collection of as many as possible for future reference.
