Like several members here I will be in Normandy next week. I'm lucky to be with veterans from the York Branch NVA. I'll be Tweeting photos from the trip at @sommecourt on Twitter using the #DDay68 hashtag. I'll also post some photos up when I can, but thought I'd start this thread so we can all contribute.
Photographs of Gondrée Café / Pegasus Bridge, Bénouville (2012) You are privileged to be accompanying a group of Normandy Veterans, their friends and relatives, Paul. I trust everything goes well. I made my own personal pilgrimage to the area a few days early as I was not travelling with an official Veterans Group. Attached are some some of the recent photographs I took outside the Gondrée Café and the modern-day 'Pegasus Bridge', Bénouville (adjacent to the Caen Canal). One may reasonably make the case this would be the best place to begin with a collection of photographs os the Normandy Landing areas. The Gondrée Café was the first dwelling in N.W. Europe to be 'liberated' on in the night of 5 / 6 June 1944. It was subsequently used as a First Aid Post where medical aid was given to the casualties in the battle to hold the 6th Airborne Division bridgehead over the Caen Canal and Orne river. Those who know thi area will understand why the photographs are only of the outside of the café. The café still does a nice pot of tea and good food! The original 'Pegasus Bridge' over the canal was one of the key objectives of the British 6th Airborne Division of 5 / 6 June. The bridge seen in the photograph replaced the wartime Pegasus Bridge which was re-sited to the nearby 'Pegasus' Memorial Museum.
Jos Lovely photos. Thank you for posting. Brings back memories when I visited a few years ago. Lesley
I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's photos. I was planning on attending the 68th Anniversary ceremonies myself, but my trip got pushed back a month and a half. I still haven't been to Normandy although I've been to Europe numerous times.
Arrived in Normandy. Veterans all keyed up - some interesting visits coming up tomorrow. Have a great day Paul regards Keith
If you are looking for an excuse to go on twitter then today is the day. Paul is tweeting some excellent photos from Normandy.
I'll be Tweeting photos from the trip at @sommecourt on Twitter using the #DDay68 hashtag. And here is a most excellent example: https://twitter.com/sommecourt/status/210662997532749825/photo/1 No excuses. Get signed up, get tweeting and get following!
Thanks - will post some photos from my DSLR when I'm back. Having a great week with the vets. Sad it's coming to an end.
