    Hi Clive,

FG Hayes was my mothers father, my parents said they knew little of what happened to him or where he was originally buried. So I spent quite a while researching where he was stationed etc, and ended up in Thailand where Tasao was and indeed the cemetery area he was first in before he was exhumed and lost, he now has no known grave.

Now I've seen the photos you've taken I'm amazed my mother or grandmother never said he was mentioned on a grave 20 minutes up the road from Hertford where I'm from! So I best get my backside to the cemetery to find the said grave.

I'm assuming that there was no direct link that you took the photos, was it just because it mentioned a fallen soldier?

    Thanks

    Rob

    Hello Rob

No link mate I always scan/ look at the private headstones just in case a casualty is remembered on them.

    Hi Clive,

You've found a part of my family history that would have been lost otherwise, much appreciated mate. Now I just have identity where he's actually buried in Thailand.

    Cheers

    hello Rob
Its likely his grave was never marked or lost so it will be a tall order to chase it down.

Re his commemoration on the Singapore Memorial
Within Kranji War Cemetery stands the SINGAPORE MEMORIAL, bearing the names of over 24,000 casualties of the Commonwealth land and air forces who have no known grave. Many of these have no known date of death and are accorded within our records the date or period from when they were known to be missing or captured
The SINGAPORE (UNMAINTAINABLE GRAVES) MEMORIAL, which stands at the western end of the Singapore Memorial, commemorates more than 250 casualties who died in campaigns in Singapore and Malaya, whose known graves in civil cemeteries could not be assured maintenance and on religious grounds could not be moved to a war cemetery.Cemetery Details

might be worth introducing yourself here other members will be able to add info User Introductions

    Hi Clive,

Yes it won't be easy, the death railway museum in Kanchanaburi, Thailand, suggest I should try to push the MOD to find out, but I think it's highly unlikely they will bother. But according to the museum it is quite unusual for them to have lost a lieutenant colonel?

The people that were either side of his original grave in Tasao are next to each other in the cemetery in Kanchanaburi. So I would assume that he is in an unknown grave there somewhere, but who knows.

Kranji is on my list of places to visit.

    Cheers

    Rob
