It looks as though the CWGC has omitted one of those crewmembers who died from the Eumaeus in 1941, who died later from wounds, a William Moore, age 25. He is recorded in the DASR as dying on the hospital ship Oxfordshire on the 17th January 1941, which I believe was in Freetown at the time, where the survivors were landed. Trying to put a case together for an official commemoration with the CWGC.

Cargo ship Eumaeus, 7,472grt, (Alfred Holt & Co.) loaded with a general cargo and 265 service personnel sailed from Birkenhead on the 19th December 1940 bound for Cape Town. On the 14th January sailing independently about 110 nautical miles West, North-West of Freetown the ships Chief Officer sited the Italian submarine Commandante Cappellini on the surface. At a range of 4000 yards the Eumaeus opened fire on the sub with her small deck gun. During the subsequent dual the ship was hit by forty shells and raked by machine gun fire. Badly damaged and listing to starboard the order to abandon ship was given. All the ships lifeboats had been blown overboard or destroyed in the attack and so the men were forced to jump overboard. Ninety minutes after first sighting the sub, the ship was struck by a torpedo and rolled over and sank in position 08' 55N 15' 03W. Nine crewmembers and eleven service personnel were lost. The survivors, many struggling in the shark infested waters desperately clung to any wreckage they could find. Several hours later the naval trawlers HMS Bengali and HMS Spaniard came to their rescue, eventually landing them at Freetown.

Also looking into the death of crewmember from the ex Danish Merchant ship Skjold at the time under the British flag. Karlo Petersen, age 23 from North Shields. Recorded in the DASR “Killed by gunfire from enemy E-boat” attack on 22nd February 1945. He has also been overlooked by the RGSS and CWGC.

Cargo ship Skjold, 1,345grt (MOWT, Ellerman Wilson Line) loaded with a cargo of cement and fertiliser at Hull for London joined the 19 ship Convoy FS-1734, which departed Methil on the 20th February 1945. Two days later off Great Yarmouth the convoy was attacked by a number of German E-boats and the British Merchant ships Blacktoft and Goodwood were sunk by torpedo, while the Skjold was raked with machine gun fire, but managed to arrive at Great Yarmouth later that same day.
