No 3 STC

Discussion in 'Royal Signals' started by Jeffrey Street, Jun 18, 2025.

  1. Can someone help me decipher the location recorded to the right of No 3 STC in this entry from a signalman's service file?

Also, am I correct that the one on an angle below it is Braithwaite? Edited: From another entry in the same file, I think it's actually Slaithwaite.

    It's definitely Slaithwaite.
I think it's something like Lensnay ? Lensway? as I can see an 'n' for the third letter. I can see 7 letters in the word.

  5. I agree it could be Lensway (a location in Mawsley, Kettering, Northamptonshire), but I've not found a reference that would put 3 STC there.

I’m not finding anything at that location that would indicate any military use. A copy of a 1945 map of the area, and I can’t see anything. I have checked a couple of the larger “lodges or manors” to see if they were taken over by the Army for use, but again found nothing. I’m NOT positive that the name Lensway could be a location on No 3 STC?

The “red circle” I put on the map, to indicate the current location of Mawsley and I’ve also post a google map of the location today. You can see on the 1945 map their is no indication of any permanent structures etc (not saying the Army couldn’t have build a temporary camp and “possibly” it was torn down before the 1945 map was produced. (But I was a “surveyor” in the Canadian Army, and maps are researched many years before finally production…..so have a temporary camp not show would be a surprise to me EXCEPT if it was a complete “tented camp”. Also, as I said before it was quite common for the Army to requisition large houses or estates and use them during that time? Could be a possibility
