Hi, I recently obtained my fathers army service record from The Coldstream Guards. Shortly after his arrival in UK in May 1945 as a returning POW my father had indicated his intention, as a time expired pre war regular soldier, not to continue in the army. He was allowed 3 months repatriation leave after 3½ years as a Prisoner of War in Italy and Germany. His parent Battalion left England for Palestine in August 1945. His record states he had several ERE postings (Extra Regimental Establishment?) from August 1945 until he commenced 81 Days Class A Release leave in January 1946 prior to his discharge to Section B Regular Army Reserve in May 1946. On 2nd August 1945 he was posted to “No 2 Sel & Trng Regt RAC” (Number 2 Selection & Training Regiment, Royal Armoured Corps?). On 29th August 1945 he was posted to “No 7 Chilwell M.T. Group” (Number 7 Chilwell Motor Transport Group?) On 7th October 1945 he was posted to “No 4 Chilwell M.T. Group” (Number 4 Chilwell Motor Transport Group?) Can any members assist me with the locations of these units please and explain what the “Chilwell MT Groups” were (if Chilwell is a unit title/acronym rather than a location!). Thanks. Steve Y.
260 acres of the Hall estate land between Chilwell and Toton, Notinghamshire was appropriated by the War Department during the Great War. this was the site of the Chillwell Ordnance depot which was one of the major MT depots and incorperated parts of the fighting vehicle reasearch establisment.
