Hi all I am a new member , just interested in learning some more about world war 2 in my area.....I am australian but have been living in Italy for quite a while. I live about 500 metres from the Meldola war cemetry, and about 10 kilometres from Mussolinins tomb, so there are definately some interesting landmarks nearby. I never realised how heavy the fighting was in this are at the end of 1944, I spoke to an old lady from here and she told me about some of the incidents, ( including the germans blowing up the old bridge in Meldola) If anyone wants any photos from the Meldola was cemetry please let me know.
Greg - welcome to the Forum and pleased to hear that you are settled at very near Modena - the home of both Pavarotti and Milrella Freni, two great opera stars who grew up to-gether - and shared a wet-nurse -and as Freni was fond of saying - "guess who got all the milk " he was a 300 pounder whereas she was less than 100 pounds - soaking wet ! The heavy fighting in that area was virtually all over by that time as they had given up just South of the River Po and the chase was on into - Padua and Venice with 6th Armoured - 46th and 78th going on into Austria- The Kiwi's and others heading for Trieste -the real heavy stuff started way down South at Foggia/ Minturno in the East with the Garigliani River - Then the Sangro - Moro - Ortona in the fall of '43 carrying on to Cassino - Trasemino then the Gothic and finally tapering off at the Po in the April of '45...there was a lot of REAL heavy stuff South of Modelo/Modena ! Cheers

Greg, I've just checked that there are only 145 graves in that cemetery. You may as well do the whole lot in one go. It'll save you having to go back. PS. I'll have a look in the 46 Div history later & see what it says about your town.
Welcome Greg. Are there any NZers buried in the churchyard? If so could you take a photo of the grave plus the churchyard for me to pass on to my NZ friend who is helping with a project to get all the NZ graves onto a website. Spidge on here would also appreciate any Aussies.... Dee
