For those like ritson who missed it originally, here is the best explanation!!

Thanks Geoff. So, the WW1 search facility has been closed down!

When "Geoff's (Wonderful) Search Engine" has enabled me to corrcecly identify particular casualties I have acknowledged this assistance in any subsequently written down, which should be the usual procedure for a researcher. These search engines have certainly been appreciated and have been a useful tool for researchers.

I have always found the CWGC will help with an enquiry where possible. But, unless the enquiry is relatively straightforward it can take weeks or months to get an answer. By using "Geoff's Search Engine" it can be possible to find the required answer to an enquiry in a matter of minutes.

Sorry about the request for clarification about what had happend to the WW1 search engine. Sometimes I have found statements posted to this forum difficult to understand with the modern abbreviations, 'in jokes' and similar. (UK English is my first language, incidentally).

Cheers Geoff thanks for the link was just researching some WW1 chaps. Find using your search engine far easier. How long do we have with the WW1 engine ?

    Regards Michael.

It would seem it is still the DB's, from what I'm hearing elsewhere. Website was renewed last August, domain re-registered today so at least 2 years - or until something better comes along to make it redundant. Enjoy the additional info searching - which I've especially enhanced. (well I've done almost buggerall for the last 11 days!)

I'm not sure it all works - rank on non-UK may be iffy, there may be other bits not fully working. For Awards put spaces between the letters (D C M and not DCM etc)

    cheers,

    geoff

Just to say how much I appreciate (and use it)...
I've been researching the Battle, East Sussex War Memorial.
I'd got up to about 56 in each War, but was suspicious of WW1 as I've found elsewhere that it's about 50% higher than WW2 casualties for the same locality.
I'd been using the Google Advanced Search on CWGC site and pulled another 27 Names just before Christmas. After a lengthy session this evening, I now have 145 Names for WW1.
I doubt that I would have found these "new" Names without taking up CWGC time by asking for all with Battle connections. So THANKS!!

    Kevin,

Those who were with me from the beginning may remember the original engine only had records with additional info, which was one of the main reasons I started it. I cannot believe they are not including this in the update.

Geoff, I'm sure they must have been looking to at least replicate, if not surpass, what you were able to achieve with GSE.
If that hasn't been the directive of the remit for the CWGC upgrade, then someones "dogs b*llocks" should be used to suspend them!!
I would have expected the CWGC announcement to clarify that it does all what could be done with GSE (and hopefully even more, if possible). Otherwise what's the point of the "upgrade" when frequent CWGC database users know what can be achieved with the existing version.
As for what you have (or more accurately, NOT) been doing for the last 11 days, it's a well earned rest. If you're still at a loose end, my car could do with a clean!!!!
Happy New Year and "Thanks" again, having GSE WW1 back again is an unexpected blessing and the old PC will be running hot while it lasts!!
