I have a photograph of my father (Rasc Tipper) in his Dodge truck. On the back of photo he has written Ness Canal 1945. War diary places him in Netherlands/ Belguim/ Germany. Have been unable to find location. Anyone heard of it?

Only river Ness I have heard of is in Scotland and the "Caledonian" Canal. Maybe he was on Commando training around Fort William???!!

He was definitely in Germany or Netherlands in 1945. He was abroad from July 1944 until Feb 1946 with no home leave.

No Ness Canal in The Netherlands that I know of. Soldiers often got the names wrong of foreign places or made up their own names. Also, sometimes the names of places change over time. If you post the photo and the unit your father was in then that might provide more clues.

I wonder if the place is Neuss near Dusseldorf. On google maps you can see a cutting off the Rhine creating a harbour area. It is not a river so could be loosely termed a canal I suppose.
