    Very interesting stuff - my opinion would be that NES would be "no enemy seen" but "no enemy sighted" means the same so I wouldn't worry about it! I have been transcribing some diaries that are obviously written by someone with medical training, i.e. they are totally impossible to decipher - perhaps that was the intention!

    BTW You mention the Green Howards regimental history - do you have a title for that?

    Hallo Tanja,

    As Stolpi already said, map references. All Allied troops were issued maps of Holland with so-called gridlines. Those lines were in fact the x and y-axis. For example: 740 698. 74 indicates the position on the x-axis, 0 is the decimal position in the grid. 69 indicates the position on the y-axis and 8 is the decimal position in the grid.
