I found an old rifle in my late grandfather's garage and I believe it is a Japanese Arisaka. I am not sure what type it is and have come across mixed/conflicting results while searching online. I believe it could be a Type 38-3, but it seems like the bolt is not enclosed quite enough. Could anyone help me figure it out? I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

    I have uploaded some pictures.

I can't give you an answer, but if you want to register at Historic Battles forum and post your question and pictures on weapons and hardware, you may get some information.

The moderator of that forum, Whiskey Brother, is not only a gunsmith by profession, but he is also a collector who I know owns an Arisaka 99 in full working condition.

    Also, good pictures at:

Your rifle certainly does look like a Type 38 with the bolt cover removed, although even then not quite the same.

This article on markings may also help:

I figured it out with some help from a few different websites, and once i got the name of the rifle, my searches all came back with exactly the same rifle i've got. It's a Type I rifle made by the italians for the Japanese. It used Carcano bolts with Arisaka hardware and main design. Thanks for your help and the links guys!
