Hello! I have a question about British 6 pdr anti-tank gun , i really don't know what's different between MkI,MkII,MkIII...etc,i have already saw the article before, but i still don't get how to Identify them.Does anyone can help me?thanks. Abraham
Abraham If you are talking ground mounted 6 pounders, then Mk II had a short barrel and Mk IV a long barrel. It would appear that some of the Mk II had muzzle brakes due to improved ammunition, but my impression is that most of the Mk IIs did not, whereas the Mk IVs did. The Mk III (short barrel) and Mk V (long barrel) were mounted only on tanks. Mk I was the original ground mounted design design, but did not see action. You may also see the American 57mm - same gun but built to US standards - long barrel and bigger wheels. HTH Chris
Hi Chris tanks for your response,i really appreciate it.I have another question is i hear some 6 pdr gun use for the british airborne. Is it have any difference between them ?thanks. Abraham
Quite a bit. The carriage - Mk3 (Airborne) - was modified to reduce its width and weight. There are some useful photos here, though it doesn't say where it is.
This photo, dated 11 Aug 42, of a MkIII tank gun on the anti-tank carriage shows the prominent trapezoidal lug on top of the breech block which is a feature of the MkIII and MkV tank guns: http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=71392&stc=1&d=1325707913
