I'm looking for a sound effect that I'm not exactly sure what the sound or alarm was used for. I could better search for it online if I knew what the name of the sound was. You usually hear it when you are watching a old WW II movie where a convoy of ships are cruising along and there is some weird kind of sequence of horn blasts (3 or 4) or something where it gets a higher pitch. Like a bunch of frigates or destroyers cruising around. Usually it happens at the end of the movie. I know this is a bad description, but I'm not really sure how to describe it.
I know what you mean, it's when their hooters go "woop woop woop" isn't it? Like you say always on war movies from the 1950s of the Royal Navy in WW2. Welcome to the site thomhee.
I think you know what I'm talking about. Not sure if they are exactly called "Hooters" or not. Trying to figure out what the name of the call or alarm is and what it was used for.

On U.S. warships wasn't there an alarm similar to the one you describe called "General Quarters" or "Battle Stations?" JT
Definitely not General quarters. I have heard that alarm many times and it doesn't even sound close. I have only heard the alarm or "noise" that I am searching for in the movies (old movies) Usually 3 long beep type noises that get higher in pitch. I have usually only seen them in the movies by a bunch of frigates or destroyers.
Spidge, do you know what I am talking about? Wish I had a name for it and what it was used for. I'm actually thinking about calling the local VFW or American Legion.
Hi Thomee, welcome to the forum mate. Thanx to Spidge's help I've found this on Youtube. Forward it to 4:00 mins. Is this the sound you're on about? YouTube - The guns of Navarone
Would love to find out exactly what that is called and what it was used for. Would also love to find a quality sound bite of it somewhere.
If it's usually heard at the end of war movies, perhaps it's some kind of victory horn. All the ships 'hooting' together or something. haha. Don't quote me like. You've got me intrigued too now. Anybody know what this sound was for?
Jacobtowne was correct. I just got off the phone with a historian at the Hampton Roads Naval museum. He informed me that that was called a "Klaxon". Basically a "General Quarters / Battle Stations" alarm. He said it sounded like the British version. Today it sounds much different. Not so high pitched.

dbf, on your first post: " Hi, Came across this page, but don't think your one is on it, lot of subs. AUTHENTIC NAVY ALARM SOUNDS d" Were you able to listen to any of these? I couldn't get them to play.
dbf, on your first post: AUTHENTIC NAVY ALARM SOUNDS Were you able to listen to any of these? I couldn't get them to play. Hi, Yes, through windows media player, no problem. In fact, going back, I listened to all of the surface ships... Diane
Dear Thomhee: This sound that are you depicted perfectly I heared too in numerous films. Seems that all the warships in formation and all the men onboard must will placed in his respective place on combat. In my language is the Order "¡ZAFARRANCHO DE COMBATE!" Ah!
