    Hi,

I can recall a discussion in web a couple of years back which included a picture of a KVII located on western germany, late war. IIRC it was taken to Krupp for evalution purposes. Anyhow, I've never run into information of KVII's being used in western front, in organized units and in numbers to say at least. Much of the way of captured KVII's is somewhat well documented.

Having said that, Germans modified many KVII's in their service, with the commanders cupola being the most distinctive feature. They also clearly marked the vehicles in their use, with regular style or even enlarged crosses painted on turret sides. The picture in your case lacks both, which somehow suggests that it necessarily wasn't a vehicle organic to any of the few units that actually were build around KVII's. If it really is a German vehicle, which isn't impossible at all, and furthermore if it was located in western front, which would be more surpising, it would certainly make a very rare vehicle pretty much unique of it's kind.

[Looks to me to be a KV 2 as well, the KV 1 is similar but with a smaller turret

The KV2 Kept at the Krupp plant at Essen was bought there in 1941 and took part in the defence of the plant in april 1945, on other pictures i have seen of it it doesnt appear to have received any of the German modifications (cupola etc.) neither has this vehicle and if it's amongst photos taken by Tommy Atkins then it could well be that vehicle, it's just so hard to find individual distinguishing features on them (damage and shell strikes are often the only way of 'fingerprinting' them), also worth thinking about is that nearly every beaten kv2 you'll see is riddled with damage as attackers chipped away at the formidable mobile pillbox, this one seems pristine so either there wasn't much of a fight or the vehicle failed early on.. or maybe it's even a captured picture of the tank when it was a curiosity to the Germans? hope this helps a little. I'm definitely off to find out more about the fall of Krupp so cheers for that.

there does appear to have been a building very like the one in the background at Krupp Essen but the only clear picture i can find is a nineteenth century sketch, The building does seem very typical of Factories in the area and the 'Heritage' shed would be just the place to photograph captured vehicles. More checking needed, the Krupp plant was so huge by the 40's that it's very hard to pick out individual buildings..

Hand to hand? did you ever go back and see if there were any details on the back of the picture? if it is the Krupp KV2 then it's a very unusual beast.

Sorry folks. Just back from checking out the Battery Archives. There are no references on or about the tank. What you see is all there is.
In 1944 and 1945, the Battery moved from Caen, Falise, Nijmegen, Ardennes, Hasselt, Ciney, Reichswald Forest, Wesel, Damme, Sandbostel, Belsen, Harz Mountains, Hamburg and Cuxhaven, in that order. There are about 60 German photos in the archive with no references.
