Ok, I wonder if the image in my question was too blurred for people to recognise. Here is a clearer picture, with the national flag edited out. The dark colour is over-exposure - in reality she was light grey. Big clue: the gun turrets were two quadruple 13-inch.
French battleship Dunkerque Yes. Her sister ship was the Strasbourg In reality, they were France's answer to the German pocket battleships, i.e. relatively small but with very powerful gun turrets but only two rather than three or four of them. This French class was probably superior to the German, certainly in terms of firepower. Dunkerque was damaged by the British at Oran in June 1940; Strasbourg escaped, and Hood stripped a turbine chasing her. Both were scuttled by the French at Toulon in Nov 1942 to prevent the Germans getting hold of them. Your turn, Kyt
Cheers Adrian. A clue always helps!! Well, to make it interesting (some of you will find this easy), identify the ship from this:
Boy, does that look familiar. It's not HMS Prince of Wales. It's not HMS Ark Royal. Is it HMS Trumpeter, an escort carrier?

HMS Illustrious http://www.militaryfigures.co.uk/acatalog/HMS-Illustrious.html Yep, well done Your go, PC
I'll give the answer to this and leave the next question open to anyone. http://www.answers.com/topic/uss-buckley
I was sunk in the engagement and three of my countries other types like me were damaged. View attachment 3342
Clues abound! This ship is named after a town/city in both England and America. A President of the United States was once a mayor of this city. In America this city is in a county which is also named after another English county. It is in one of the New England states.

Massachusetts = Hampshire = Northampton = Calvon Coolidge = USS Northampton?
You are correct. Sorry the clues were so cryptic! If I was a schoolteacher, all my students would get straight A's.

There were 24 of these ships commissioned by the US Navy - but why were they special (you don't need to name this particular one).
