    Cheer's Haara,
My childhood day's (early 60's) were all about making trollies and train spotting, steam.i drew the line when it came to digging the garden though, even for a shilling (5p).

    Graham.

Yes, a pretty poor profile of a Halifax Mk I I'd say.

Ah! Digging the garden funded my passion ( obsession?) with WW2 Airfix aircraft kits, and 'Flying Review' magazine for the aircraft drawings so I could carve them out of balsa, one of my favourites being the '60s 'Widow Maker' - so, give me a name for that?

    Hi Haara,
Think it was the American B 26 Marauder, also known as the "Flying Prostitute". But I could wrong.

    cheers.......Graham.

As the German Air Force and Navy described it, "Witwenmacher".

Classic case of a bargain basement purchase of a type that was unsuited to European weather and operating conditions.

    Hi Blutto,

I was just reading about it.(F-104 Starfighter) the German Luftwaffe lost 293 aircraft in accidents and losing a total of 110
    pilots.

    Graham.

Some write about the supposed inexperienced pilots and other things, but the reality is that the F104 was designed as a high level interceptor and was sold to European air forces as something else.. The USAF wouldn't take enough aircraft, so they re-badged the F104G as a fighter bomber and sold it in Europe at bargain prices. With a high take off and landing speed already, the significant additional weight of external tanks to make up for the limited internal fuel and the external stores to make it a 'strike' aircraft, and with no significant increase in engine power, only exacerbated the handling issues.

Regardless, it was a great airshow aircraft and the howl of a flight of four passing fast overhead was incredible.

    Hi Haara,
Looks like you had a full house mate. Well done, I guess that was much to easy for you. plane 1.jpg

Correct! The model had a piece of fuse wire in the nose that kept getting bent - too many crashed landings! But yes, more seriously, looking back the accidents took a horrific toll, and must have been devastating for the families concerned. Under ideal circumstances they should not have happened.

Found this photo in a 'name this....' on another forum. I can't put a name to it, bar that it has a lot of Miles Messenger look about it. Anyone any idea?
