Hello everyone, I am researching the history of the NAAFI, from its beginnings in 1921, to the present day. It is quite a story. Currently, I am piecing background material on its operations during the war, then in the period 1945 -55, especially operations in Hamburg and Berlin. This will be followed by the BAOR days, Cyprus, Falklands, on ships and UK operations (and many other areas). I would be especially glad to receive personal memories, anecdotes and experiences you may have of this organisation. If you can help in anyway, I would be delighted to hear from you, thanks Nathan
I cannot help, but I love the fact you're researching them, Nathan. Best of luck! Some of my earliest memories are of going to the NAAFI with Granny. Not even sure it was a NAAFI, now... They may well have called all convenience shops that.
Thank you von Poop. I will keep you posted on developments, possibly over a cup of char and wad. Nowadays, you would be hard-pushed to find a NAAFI...
Hi Nathan. There are lots of mentions in the letters I've published online in the blog Chotie Darling - try the link below, this will take you to a search on 'NAAFI'. Nothing memorable (except Chotie was in the middle of her ATS NAAFI when she was told Dick had been killed, 3 weeks after she married him). Nothing for Hamburg or Berlin of beyond 1945.
