Call me strange, and an abuser of Admin powers, but I've added the above words to the site's inbuilt censor.
For no other reason than I really don't like 'em (they sort of make my teeth grind), and I can.

You can still type Newbury, but not n e w b.
We may now be the Internet's only website that censors these, but no swear words .
I did check CWGC to make sure there were no 'new-bie' surnames, but it's clean.

I won't bin any more (this removal has enough future potential to confuse or annoy as it is, and has already made a few old intro threads look a bit... odd :D ), but just out of interest - what other Internet-ish terminology really bugs people?

Maybe if the suffix "single-handedly" were to be added to KevinC's statement, dbf's confusion would be cleared... :p

No I agree mate, they annoy me too.

I think they should be kept to online computer games and the mouths of 13 year olds and they have no place in a forum like this.

I'm not sure if you added this or simply failed to mention it but "nub" is another way and albeit, increasingly popular way to say it now.

    Regards,

    Nipper.

I don't know, if words are widely accepted and especially if they are in an
English dictionary it would be a strange thing to do. Then it is just your personal taste.:)

Certainly not in the first half dozen posts, after that it's weapons free :D

Now seriously, I find the terms on topic to be a very minor irritant only. As the Mods (PBTN) generally and punctilliously keep the forum idiot/fanboy/PRK*-free there's really not much to concern, and this from the candidate to the top Forum Billious Guy. What bugs me is a term that some of the Mods (PBTN) themselves employ: 'septic', so not much hope there and it's no skin off my nose anyway. Alternatives suggested: 'Bloody Yanks' or 'Damned Colonials'.

;) Nah, I'd still be wondering just where all these folks have been posting on the forum.

Forgive me if I am a little denser than usual (no comment, please) but are you seriously suggesting that if an innocent would-be member to this illustrious website makes his first posting and signs himself NxxxxE you will refuse his posting ?

I am reminded that back in 2005 when I was much involved on the BBC People's War website I tangled with the Beeb's own built in censor regarding the use of the word "bastard".

I hope you and others wont mind if I repeat the story:

Writing about the time I spent on the BBC WW2 Peoples War site has reminded me of an amusing episode to do with the "Bebe's" policy on the use of swear words.

Like many other websites of this type, postings were put through a pre-scanning process before being accepted and certain swear words were strictly taboo.

I had just posted a piece about my tank commander "Busty" Thomas
    BBC - WW2 People's War - Diary Entries 11th April 1945
and to my surprise it was rejected by the moderators because I had used the word "bastard". This despite the fact that "bastard" was in every dictionary and had been used to quote an actual remark made by the aforesaid "Busty".

I received an e-mail from the Moderators that said if I used asterisks (as in "BxxxxxxS) the article would then be accepted.

I settled for this and the piece was duly allowed on site until, almost a year later, I was browsing through the recent postings and noticed that more and more people were using the dreaded word and, more importantly, getting away with it !

I wrote to the Moderators and was told that the Bebe had decided to adopt a more relaxed view on the subject, to which I replied "Please can I have my BASTARD back ?

I am pleased to report that Busty's actual words are now preserved for posterity

Posts aren't refused Ron, wouldn't care to do that - the forum censor will automatically change words like 'n e w b i e' to XXXXXX.

Have a look at user intros, some usage is visible and no doubt will be until folks catch on.

It's nothing personal against those who chose to use the words, but it's something I for one agree with - anything to stop him grinding his teeth.

Are we treading dangerous ground here? Wasn't the town of Scunthorpe effectively banned from the internet a few years back when Microsoft came over all politically correct? There's bound to be a Newbiggin somewhere!

    Correct Ray,

There's a 'Newbiggin' just north of Blyth on the Northumberland Coast and a 'Longbenton' just north east of Newcastle; I leave the rest to schoolboy humour! :D

On an earlier thread myself and several other members received names, mine being a Visigoth.

I had to look that one up:D

    Shudder.
And 'Nub' is un-censor-able, otherwise we might never get to the XXX of a given matter.

    a strange thing to do.
    I never said it wasn't a bit strange ;).

    LOL
    Another shudder.

Septics & Limeys will always be with us - it just wouldn't feel like WW2T without those ever-popular words.

the smilie list needs a review long overdue
Add 'Psychic' to your long list of titles, as I was just contemplating the Smiley situation this morning.

    Wahey!

My only real concern at my, perhaps somewhat idiosyncratic but oddly satisfying, censoring is that we'll get someone researching a Gnr/Spr N e w bie one day, but I thought on balance that I'd take the risk. It can be my job to explain to some poor sod if it ever happens.
