As per Owen D's continued requests here are some pictures of my trip to Berlin. The first set of photos concerns our trip to the Seelow Heights which was were the Russians, breaking out of their bridgehead at kustrin, launched their offensive on Berlin. The first picture is taken from the top of the Heights, taken from the German Defensive positions. You can see on the left of the photo some trees heading off in the distance. This was the old Reichstrasse 1 and the Russians advanced straight up that road, following a massive bombardment. 88's were positioned where I took that picture and one can only imagine what sort of casualties the Russians took assaulting the heights.

The next picture is of a Russian memorial to their fallen in the Battle. as usual the Soviet memorials are subtle blending in well with the surroundings NOT!!!

Next up is a T-34/85 outside the Seelow Mueseum and that is my brother next to it. There are other weapons at this museum unfortunately they are all Soviet. There was a Stalin Organ on display so this had to be photographed!

The Museum at Seelow is worth going to. They do a 50 minute multimedia presentation on the battle and they have a wonderful 3 d map of the area showing Russian Advance and German Positions. Unfortunately they did not have much in the way of English Literature, all the books were in German, Polish or Russian.

The last picture is of me standing outside Zhukov's Command Post. The bunker is long since filled in but the area is still filled with trenchworks and is worth the trip, about 10 miles south of Seelow Town

GH great pix, must have been quite a back flash from the Katyusha, seeing the armored shield over the wind screen.

    Looks like fun in Berlin

    Cheers,

First time I have seen this thread and so it appears that the photographs have not stood the test of time.

Pity I too would have liked to see them.

I feel a trip coming on in better weather:D
