Deacs Well i am from Cumbria.

My uncle Rob and I received some great news on Friday.

Finally my Great Uncle will be remembered on Cockermouth War Memorial.

Rob e-mailed the town council only last week and they have already agreed that he should be on the memorial of remembrance.

    Regards Michael.

Quite a good result. Was he the last one you know of to be missed off or were there others?

    Hi Joseph,

So far he is the only WW2 casualty but I haven't really researched WW2 as much as WW1 casualtys'.

I have found 6 WW1 casualty's so far that were born in Cockermouth but moved away, 2 in Australia and the others are scattered up and down the country.

    Michael.

Do you happen to know what the criteria were (if any) for a WW1 casualty's name to be written on the Cockermouth war memorial?

Would you know if these two WWI Merchant Seamen are commemorated on the memorial.

SMITH, Wireless Operator, THOMAS STANLEY, S.S. Lorle (West Hartlepool). Mercantile Marine. Drowned, as a result of an attack by an enemy submarine, 11th June 1918. Age 19. Son of John and Sarah Smith (nee Tunstall), of 37, Station St., Cockermouth, Cumberland. Born at Cockermouth, Cumberland.

WILLIAMS, Third Engineer, ROBERT, S.S. Kendal Castle (Liverpool). Mercantile Marine. Drowned, as a result of an attack by an enemy submarine, 15th September 1918. Age 25. Son of Jane Ann Dixon, of Gate House, Eaglesfield, Cockermouth, Cumberland.

    Hi Billy,

Thomas Smith is on Cockermouth memorial but Robert Williams isn't.

I will have a look to see if he is remembered on Eaglesfield's memorial, Eaglesfield is only a stone throw away from Cockermouth.

Do you have any information or any pictures of the memorial they are remembered as I would love to have them.

    Regards Michael.

Deacs Well i am from Cumbria.

Looking for Robert Williams in ancestry he was born in Maryport 1893.
Living in Cockermouth 1901 with his mam and granda.
And in 1911 he is back in Maryport.

But he isn't remembered on Eaglesfield memorial either, maybe Maryport.

    Michael.

    Hi Joseph,

I don't know the answer to that question sorry, how would I find this.

Eaglesfield has never been within the boundaries of Cockermouth Urban District / Town Council. Hence I would not expect Robert Williams to be listed on Cockermouth War Memorial. Eaglesfield is a township within Brigham parish so that would be where he would be commemorated (if anywhere in the district). But both Brigham civil and ecclesiastical parishes have particular peculiarities to their history, so it might even depend as to what one classes as 'Brigham'.

This was one of the reasons why I asked earlier what the original criteria were for inclusion on the Cockermouth War Memorial. It might come down to where one draws the line, which may not be an easy matter.

Often these memorials commemorate people who have no 'obvious' link to the community or a seemingly 'tenuous' link (such as the person's grandparents living within the parish or the parents or spouse moving there after the war).

They are both commemorated on the WWI section of the Tower Hill Memorial in London. I don't have any photos of the individual panels they are commemorated on, but a search on google images will give photos of the main memorial itself
