My great uncle: John 'Jack' Rogerson

  1. Kyle,

These are great. We would need to find more, since these have their unit identified and they are not RA or RN or Combined Ops as Jack or the Captain would perhaps have been.

I haven't checked the Map References, but they might also provide some indication as to the identity of the bodies.

Michel, they may not be listed as unknown RA or RN they may be just unknown ,perhaps an unknown Captain? but with `Jack` he might have been wearing `army` battledress (not sure ). I have only searched on 07/06/1944 perhaps if I broaden the dates a little?

  3. Kyle,

You're right of course. I'm only saying that since they are identified as coming from a unit that we know was not theirs, we know it is not them. For example, Serial 3 in your first sheet above (Douvres) noted as UKNOWN still has been identified as WARWICKS, with the handwritten note "R Warwicks Shoulder Titles", so we know that he was positively identified as a Warwick, rather than by default because he was found with other bodies who had Warwicks identity. This is less certain with the NORFOLKS unknown, for example.

As for their dress, they would both have been wearing Army battledress, with only the shoulder badges/titles differing. See Danny's post here:

Yes, you might want to broaden the date because the date of death might not have been known at the time of the exhumation. It is actually not so much a matter of date as of location: we would need to check all lists with LEBISEY or LEBISEY WOOD as origin.

The last column refers to a Report Number. I suppose this is the Exhumation Report? It seems that they used to be available online on the CGWC site, but not any more?

    Hello Michel,
Sorry I`ve muddied the waters a little, the two `concentration` reports were just to confirm that casualties were originally buried at Lebisey and Lebisey Wood I did not mean to imply the missing on those lists were the two men in question, Sorry for the confusion.
Unfortunately when widening the search I have found that the CWGC have not provided `concentration` reports for all so their original place of burial cannot be established in all cases. The CWGC also do not provide a listing for unknowns, which I have always felt is wrong as `unknown` or not they deserve their place on their `Debt of Honour`

  5. Kyle,

No, it's OK, I did understand what you meant. I agree that the CGWC should have a listing for the unknown, with details of their original grave locations and exhumation report online.
