Deacs Well i am from Cumbria.

I have just found a really bad photo of my great granda Herbert Deacon, I no very little about Herbert but what i do no is that he joined the first world war at the age of 18 and when the second started he joined up again, and what i am to believe is that he joined the ambulance regiment, well here is the photo so if anybody would like to have a look and to see what uniform he is wearing much appreciated.

    Regards Michael.

Photo not bad anymore thanks to forum member RCO : Pristine Image

RAF unifrom. The 'collar dog' (its not one) looks like an American medics badge.

If you can get access to one of the computers at the Cumbria Libraries (0or the Archives) you might be able to try searching the WW1 military records held by 'Ancestry'. Or, if you know someone with a subscription to 'Find My Past' you could try asking them if they can help.

At the very least, it may give you the medal roll list which would give the service number, unit and so on, which would be a start. I have found a lot of WW1 service personnel this way.

    Hi,

Just had a look at Ancestry, there would be about 20 Herbert/H Deacon records in the medal roll. I am attaching one for an H Deacon in the RAF:

I have also looked at the Service and Pension records quickly, couldn't really see much, I will cross reference service numbers of the medal roll with the Service and Pension records and get back to you.

If you have time you might want to cross reference the MIC's with the Silver War Badge list too. Might narrow down the list (on the assumption he wasn't invalided out of service!!!)

    Michael,

Having gone through the records on Ancestry armed with the service number on the medal index card previously posted, I have not been able to find anything. I also checked for records for H/Herbert/Hubert Deacon/Deakin born in Armley/Leeds but, again could find nothing.

It is possible a check of AIR 79 at the National Archives may give you something.

Have you been able to search the 'Military Records' section on the 'Ancestry' website yet, by any chance? Not all WW1 records have survived, but a lot of the medal index cards have survived.

You could try getting access at one of the local libraries or the Archives Office. They have access to the 'Ancestry' website which you can refer to.

    Good luck.
