Dad was born in Berlin - have managed to find out bit about his family (all pretty sorrowful stuff) - thanks mainly to his brother surviving the war and becoming fairly well known (and writing an autobiography!) Like I said in earlier posts - he just did not talk about it.
Will be buying your book - just read a bit about it on Amazon - wow!
    Thanks!

    Thanks Rob
I found the original Oath of Allegiance and Certificate of Naturalisation in Dad's things - amazing historical documents for us! Will print off your Gazette info and add to my file.
    Kind regards

Am down in sunny Weymouth - but planning trip up to London next week - and this has completely fired me up! IWM and NA will be on our itinerary thank you! Our first port of call was to the Wiener Library to reseacrh the Jewish ancestors as a fanastically helpful and kind archivist there has spent a bit of time on the phone with me already. Will definitely make time for the military records side.
Can't quite get over how kind everyone is being!
    Thank you

    Brilliant - thanks!
Somewhere in the depths of my brain I kind of remember that now from German lessons at school, but only did German for a year and am not going into how long ago that was!!!

    Hello Ali,

Apologies for the gender hiccup, which I have corrected. My son is called Alistair and my wife and I call him that or sometimes I call him 'Al'. But he went through his school years being called 'Ali'...

Your trips to the IWM and the NA will hopefully be enlightning, but maybe not particularly personal to your dad. Regardless, before you go have a search for the threads on this site that give instructions on how to make the most of your time at the NA. If you are going to spend a day there, the 'best practice' guidance will give you tips on how to get a days value from your trip!

    Please keep posting your discoveries...

    Best,

    Steve.

    Ali -
Since you are in "sunny" Weymouth - as I was last May 2010 - you might want to pop in to see Sapper - Brian Guy who lives in Swanage - he can fill you in on all the Army stuff and is a bulwark here on the forum - he is 100% disabled but his head is still with it - and his dear wife Shiela - they will both welcome you to their home- and give them our best regards should you meet ....they are good people to know ...
    Cheers

    Thanks Ali.

Do you know the circumstances of your father's arrival in the UK? How/when, etc? I'd be very interested to hear how it compares to that of my father.

Also, how did your father enlist in the British Forces when he was still (presumably) a German citizen? My father committed identity theft to avoid that issue.

    Thanks,

    Marc
